PHOTOSHOP 00

Recently I did a photo shoot for my friend's uni project, I helped her to prepare the shoot and modelled for her also. There were certain parts of the images that she wanted to remove or change. I have been learning photoshop for a week or two now so I proposed I could try edit the photos for her and make the changes she wanted. ORIGINAL EDITED ORIGINAL EDITED

HOME PRINTING 00

Image
Exploring different methods of printing at home. I have experimented with different methods of printing using minimal resources. Using a stencil made from paper, I covered it with black drawing ink and used it as a sort of stamp to create the prints. The more prints I did the strength of the mark would fade over time and therefore lost shape. This method created quite a lot of leakage from the stencil and created a very rough outline, so I experimented with doing it the opposite way by cutting out the areas I would colour and use the empty space as my line. I used black and red drawing ink with a paint brush to create these. The stencil afterwards when painted with ink I think is very effective and creates an interesting dry, sharp look. I took scans of these also. I enjoyed this method and really like the red contrasting with the black. I did the same method however this time I cut away all of the negative space to print so I was just left with a stencil of

PROJECT PLANNING

Image
When planning what I wanted to do for my project and the direction I wanted to take my brief. I had to think about multiple different concepts and ideas, and take into consideration all aspects of what I wanted to produce and any problems or troubles that I could face throughout the project. I spent a lot of time thinking about different routes I could go down with the self directed project for example I have an interest in fashion and have experienced working in that area previously so that was a consideration, although I had done a fashion project earlier in the course so I was more inclined to explore a different specialism. Illustration had always been a big interest of mine so I began to explore and think about different aspects of illustration and different artists/styles of work that I enjoy.  I thought about different ideas for a theme and also a method/style for producing my work. After thinking about different routes of illustration I began to explore Manga. As I hav

PATRICK BATEMAN

Image
Patrick Bateman is a fictional character created by Bret Easton Ellis and is the main character in the 1991 novel: American Pyscho and the 2000 film adaptation by Mary Harron. He is a man consumed by greed and envy to the point where he will murder his peers to feel the satisfaction of being in power.  As his most apparent and controlling emotion is greed I believe he is a good character to research for my project, he is also portrayed as an overly violent and vicious man filled with wrath, as one of this project aims is to create a violent and frightening atmosphere he presents a lot of the qualities I would like to portray in my comic. I have researched and reviewed Mary Harron's representation of him as a character and taken notes for my own character development. Using this research I chose an iconic scene from the film to study and tried present a clear story board using pencil sketches to illustrate the feelings of violence, rage and fear used in the scene, exper

STORY BOARD 00

Image
A small storyboard made with rough sketches in 2b/6b pencil and 0.1mm red liner pen. Exploring ways of producing a short story without dialogue or direct information, leaving an audience to create their own narrative. Exploring perspectives, drawing in-action scenes and use of black and white shading methods.

MEDIUM//MATERIAL CHANGES

Throughout my project I have planned to use different printing techniques (lino/screen/mono) to develop and practice with, also to create full finished pieces. My final major piece I had planned to print myself using one of these methods, I had also planned to use the book binding workshop to help me produce my own comic fully created and combined by myself. However, due to unforeseen circumstances I am unable to access any of the workshops or resources available to me before at the time of planning this project and writing my brief . Therefore I am having to drastically change my process of producing my final piece and my plans to explore these methods as practice and other resources I had planned to use. I will begin to experiment with different mediums and processes I have available to me, such as:   Paints (acrylic/gouache)  Home printing methods  Digital design/editing  Drawing inks  Collage   Brusho I will experiment and explore different possibilities with th

BLAME! MANGA

Image
BLAME! by Tsutomu Nihei .  BLAME! is a cyber-punk action manga comic series, created by Tsutomu Nihei. It follows the lonesome story of one man; "Kirii" as he travels, searching through a never ending structure, the story finds multiple different characters along the way although none continue for long.  Tsutomu Nihei studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York, where he later went on to work in constuction and architecture. However he left to persue a career as a manga artist, his arcitecture and construction interest continues to be a big aspect of his drawing style though as his series' massivley feature huge detailed stuctures with incredibly complex designs. His comics will usually feature very little dialogue, telling the story through detailed action scenes and complex structural design, it is said that growing up he really enjoyed comic books and stories but found it difficult to follow what was happening as he struggled to read fluently, therefore he o
